The purpose of the preliminary architectural design of the Sun House Makarska building (Centre for Social Welfare) in the given location is to find the optimal architectural and landscape concept that will be acceptable for the environment, the local community and future users – children with disabilities and people with disabilities, as well as employees organized around various social activities. This solution proposes a new hybrid method that varies floor-to-floor typology – the ground floor optimizes the shape of the building to maximize compliance with the topography and construction program, thus creating a neutral base/pedestal for the construction of residential floors. These facilities are housed in an assembly that gives a clear, stance and design element to the appreciation of the value of traditional construction – smaller scale, intimate environments, simple shapes.
Requirements: The client – Provincial House of the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in Rijeka – approached us with the request to help improve the conditions for the humanitarian services they provide as part of their spiritual calling – feeding, bathing and comforting the poor and the homeless. We decided that the best solution to the request should include detached House for the Poor inside convent walls. It is a small compact building with a slightly shifted geometry – an answer to the project brief as well as to the location within the existing historical structure.
Requirements: Competition entry for the Yacht club in City of Kraljevica, 20 km south of Rijeka. This location blew our minds at the time – on the coastline of the Kraljevica bay with the historical structures, industrial facilities and shipyard facing us from all directions, and the strange vistas of the Rijeka bay opening to the north. We designed the club using three simple interconnected blocks that open up to the bay and communicate with their older “siblings” – shipyard warehouses and refinery reservoirs.
Requirements: This is competition entry for the Kindergarten Poreč with standard project brief. After we finished inspecting the site with opulent green areas we decided that the relationship of the building and the natural setting is essential for the project. The building envelope is designed with two basic materials: delicate wooden palisades that provide sun protection and emphasize the undulating facade of the building and the weathered copper for the roof should have created soft structure of clear geometry thus providing the children with the comfortable environment to explore and play in.
